Kitchen Countertop Confidential: The best countertops for kitchens

Few items in your kitchen are as important as the countertops. In terms of design and style, a countertop is what ties everything together. A countertop also needs to be durable. In fact, you will spend more time using your countertops than any other part of the kitchen, including the fridge.

The question is then, what are the best countertops for a kitchen? We asked Maria Volk, Lead Design at skön, to share the advice she gives to clients. A graduate of Pacific Design Institute in 2009, Maria has worked in many facets of the design industry. This varied experience has given her a broad understanding of both design and how to work with builders, contractors and suppliers on behalf of her clients to ensure projects go smoothly.

Kitchen Countertops

When it comes to countertops, Maria has some important advice.

  1. Good countertops are a good investment.

Put simply, a great countertop makes a great kitchen. “They look good and make cooking a joy,” Maria says. “It also adds cachet and value to your home.”

  2. A good-looking countertop must also be durable.

Countertops are a heavily used surface and are subjected to many stresses. Maria says that coffee, wine, lemon juice and other everyday products can be corrosive. “Stains and scratches can ruin both the countertop and the overall look of the kitchen,” she says.

  3. The quality of the countertop impacts the quality of your kitchen’s design.

The material, colour, and texture of your countertop has a big influence on a kitchen’s overall look and feel. “A beautify countertop will inspire both your connection to and the pride you feel in your kitchen,” Maria says.

So, what kind of countertops are up to Maria’s standard? “I almost always recommend high-composite quartz countertops,” she says. “They are non-porous, stain, scratch, and impact resistant, look great and provide a special warmth that makes people feel at home.”
